Mormonism: a world religion or a global church?

What defines a world religion? Has the faith of the Latter-day Saints
joined the ranks of Buddhism and Islam to become one of the "world
religions"?? Some scholars have argued that if is indeed a world
religion. Some counter the claim by arguing that Mormonism is "just" a
large church with a global reach. A world religion has vast
internationsl influence and generally adapts to local cultures,
allowing for a meaningful distinction between regional brands of the
religion. How does this play out with Mormons?

We will explore this topic on this blog over the next few months, off
and on. I would love to hear your comments about this important
question!
